My stint at Computerweek, owned by Systems Publishing, was great fun. Not only did I work with some fantastically smart and talented people, who have gone on to do great things professionally, I got to interview some very high-profile people at a fascinating time for South Africa. Because I really always wanted to cover politics, I requested the government beat; at the time most departments were shifting from paper-based systems but the people heading strategy came largely from political backgrounds. I also covered transport, utilities and healthcare. Within a year, I was promoted to news editor.
On my return to the UK, this work at Computerweek helped me secure some of my first freelance roles with publications like Computing and Intermedia.
